Utility poles have been installed and electricity infrastructure is developing in the Beninese communities of Kotokpa and Aglamidjodji, which together host approximately 9,000 residents. This significant infrastructure development marks a key step forward in providing modern energy access to these rural areas. This initiative is part of OnePower Africa’s broader rural electrification program in Benin, designed to bring sustainable power solutions to underserved populations. The mini-grids are projected to supply consistent and reliable electricity to about 4,700 homes and businesses situated beyond the national grid, significantly enhancing the quality of life and economic prospects for thousands. Mionwa Generation SA, a OnePower subsidiary, is actively developing these projects, overseeing the construction and implementation phases to ensure successful deployment.

Program Financing and Scope

The rural electrification program receives substantial support from a US$2.9 million financing package specifically designated for nine solar photovoltaic mini-grid sites across Benin. This full financing for the portfolio was structured as a blend of secured debt and results-based grants, a model designed to attract investment while ensuring performance and impact. This strategic financial arrangement shows the commitment to sustainable development and long-term energy access in the region. Clean Energy and Energy Inclusion for Africa (CEI Africa) backed the investment, collaborating with the Energise Africa crowdlending platform to mobilize the necessary capital. This partnership notes a concerted effort by various stakeholders to bridge the energy access gap in sub-Saharan Africa. The nine solar photovoltaic mini-grid sites are strategically located to serve communities that currently lack access to the national electricity grid, ensuring that the benefits of electrification reach those most in need.

Economic Development Initiative

OnePower is implementing its innovative Productive Use of Energy programme to stimulate local economic development in the communities, recognizing that electricity is not merely for lighting but a catalyst for growth. This initiative aims to go beyond simply providing electricity by fostering tangible economic growth within rural areas. The Productive Use of Energy programme directly supports small businesses by providing essential equipment that can transform local economies. This equipment includes vital tools such as milling machines, which can process agricultural products more efficiently; refrigeration systems, key for preserving food and expanding trade opportunities; and welding tools, enabling local artisans and repair services. By supplying these tools, OnePower intends to enable local entrepreneurs to enhance their operations, create new opportunities for employment and income generation, and contribute significantly to the broader economic development of the regions served by the mini-grids. This holistic approach seeks to maximize the impact of electrification on local livelihoods, ensuring that communities can harness the full potential of reliable power.

Next Steps and Future Plans

Immediate priorities for OnePower's operations in Benin include expanding customer connections within the newly electrified communities. This expansion focuses on bringing more households and businesses online to utilize the available power, ensuring widespread adoption and impact. Concurrently, the company plans to deploy additional generator sets across the mini-grid sites. The introduction of these generator sets is key for establishing a full solar hybrid generation capability across the mini-grids, which will integrate solar power with backup generation. This hybrid system aims to ensure a more reliable and consistent power supply, effectively complementing the intermittent nature of solar energy generation and guaranteeing power availability even during periods of low sunlight. These strategic steps are designed to maximize the reach and efficiency of the electrification efforts in Kotokpa and Aglamidjodji, setting a precedent for future rural electrification projects in Benin.
