Chief Emma Iyase, the Okao Nore-Guae in charge of Ologbo, Ehor, and Okhuoromi Communities in Edo state, issued a strong warning against attempts to establish a parallel traditional leadership structure in Ologbo. The warning follows reports of the installation of Pa Johnson Obubu Itoto, which was reportedly carried out on May 30, 2026. Chief Iyase stated unequivocally, "Any installation conducted outside the recognised traditional structures and procedures cannot enjoy legitimacy within the community." He emphasized that "No individual, group or external interest possesses the power to confer traditional authority in Ologbo outside the established Benin traditional framework," showing the singular authority of the Benin Kingdom's traditional system.
Violation of Customs
Chief Emma Iyase firmly rejected the purported installation of Pa Johnson Obubu Itoto as the Olare-Aja of Ologbo community, describing the act as sacrilegious. Iyase stated that such an installation is "capable of causing tension, confusion and division among residents," noting the potential for widespread discord within the community. He maintained that "Any installation conducted outside the recognised traditional structures and procedures cannot enjoy legitimacy within the community," reiterating the established protocols. Chief Iyase further emphasized that "No individual, group or external interest possesses the power to confer traditional authority in Ologbo outside the established Benin traditional framework," thereby denouncing the legitimacy of any parallel leadership and asserting the supremacy of the existing traditional order.
Appointed Authority
Chief Emma Iyase stated he was duly appointed by the Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II, to oversee the Ologbo community. Iyase affirmed his role is to oversee the Ologbo community, asserting his authority stems directly from the Benin traditional institution. His appointment by the revered monarch shows the established hierarchy within the Benin Kingdom's traditional leadership, making clear the legitimate source of his authority. This direct mandate from the Oba of Benin positions Chief Iyase as the sole recognized traditional representative in the area. Iyase's assertion of his legitimate appointment by Oba Ewuare II serves as a direct counterpoint to any claims of parallel authority within Ologbo, reinforcing the official traditional framework and the recognized chain of command. The Chief’s position is rooted in centuries-old customs and the directives of the critical traditional ruler of the Benin Kingdom.
Call for Peace
Chief Emma Iyase stated that the installation of Pa Johnson Obubu Itoto was alien to Benin customs and traditions, describing it as a violation of the established traditional authority recognized by the Benin Kingdom. Iyase asserted that such an act undermines the long-standing cultural practices and hierarchical structure governing traditional leadership within the region, threatening the stability and order of the community. He further explained that the Benin traditional framework has clear guidelines and procedures for the appointment and recognition of traditional leaders, which he claims were disregarded in this instance.
Chief Iyase urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and abide by the law, emphasizing the importance of community harmony despite the ongoing dispute. He confirmed that relevant traditional authorities and government institutions are being informed of the development, indicating that official channels are being engaged to address the issue. This proactive step aims to ensure that the matter is handled through legitimate means and to prevent further escalation of tension within Ologbo and its surrounding communities.
