Twelve cities across Benin are scheduled to experience electricity disruptions on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The widespread power outages will affect various zones, with scheduled interruptions occurring between 10:00 and 15:00, depending on the specific location. Residents and businesses in the affected areas are advised to prepare for the temporary loss of power.
Extensive City Disruptions
Power will be cut in Abomey-Calavi from 10:00 to 15:00, affecting the CEG Méridien, CEG Pahou, and Bazounkpa neighborhoods and their surroundings. During the same period, Cotonou-Ouest will experience outages in the Sonangnon Tokpa, Gbegbanou, and Missèbo Tokpa Hoho areas. This five-hour interruption is consistent across many urban centers.
In Porto-Novo, the disruption will also occur from 10:00 to 15:00, impacting the Tanzoun substation, Danto traffic light, Cinquantenaire, Djèvali, Dangbo, Azowlissè, Adjohoun, and Bonou. These areas represent a significant portion of the capital city and its immediate vicinity.
Ouidah will see power interruptions from 10:00 to 15:00 in Adimalè, Sékou, Dodji Aliho, and Dodji Dangban. These specific neighborhoods are key areas within the historic city. Parakou's affected areas include Banikanni, Titirou, Madina, Oké Dama, and Kpèbié, also from 10:00 to 15:00, covering diverse districts of the northern city. Dassa will experience outages in Bantè and Pira during the same five-hour window. Kandi will have power cut in Bodjécali, Madécali, and Malanville from 10:00 to 15:00.
Pobè's outage will commence later, starting at 11:00 and concluding at 15:00, and will affect Onigbolo, Iganan, Itadjèbou, Tasso, Agnizè, Adja-Ouèrè, and Ouinhi Centre, among other localities. This slightly adjusted timeframe notes localized maintenance needs. In Dogbo, Tchiklin, Klouékanmey, and Lalo are scheduled to be without power from 10:00 to 15:00. Natitingou will also face an outage during this 10:00 to 15:00 timeframe, impacting the large truck park and the Ouraubouga neighborhood, key logistical and residential zones.
Maintenance Goals and Safety
The Société Béninoise d’Énergie Électrique (SBEE) stated that these planned interventions are designed to sustainably improve the quality of electricity supply across the entire territory. The utility company emphasized its commitment to long-term infrastructure reliability, indicating that these temporary inconveniences are part of a broader strategy for grid enhancement. The SBEE has programmed this maintenance work specifically to address identified network issues and prevent future, unplanned outages.
During the maintenance work, the SBEE also issued a key safety reminder to all users. It advised the public that the entire electrical network must be considered live, even in areas officially designated for power cuts. This precaution is essential to prevent accidents and ensure public safety while technicians are working on the grid. The SBEE's message showed the potential hazards associated with assuming a de-energized network in affected zones, urging extreme caution from all citizens.
Further Scheduled Interruptions
In Cotonou-Est, the interruption will last from 11:00 to 14:00, affecting areas including Sènandé, Irédé, Massèvo, Kowégbo, and Yénawa. This shorter, three-hour window in the eastern part of Cotonou indicates specific, targeted work in those neighborhoods. For Lokossa, the same time frame of 10:00 to 15:00 applies to neighborhoods such as Gbéhoué, Kpovidji, Adjaha, Hèvè, Haundjonoudji, and Matékpo. In Bohicon, power will be cut from 10:00 to 15:00, impacting Zakpo, Ahito, Tomadaga, Lissèzoun, Dakpa PTT, and Manaboè, among other neighborhoods in the city. The utility company expressed its apologies for any inconvenience these necessary service interruptions may cause to its customers.
