Benin Partners with Producer Fifi Fender to Define National Sound

Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Yassine Latoundji met with music producer Fifi Fender on 13 October in Cotonou to initiate a partnership aimed at establishing a national sound for Benin. Fifi Fender, whose legal name is Fiacre Ahidomèhou, discussed the collaboration during the meeting held in the Beninese capital. The meeting served as the formal commencement of this governmental initiative, which seeks to formalize and promote the artistic identity of the nation on both domestic and international stages.

Developing a National Musical Signature

Fifi Fender intends for the project to establish a distinct musical signature by synthesizing traditional rhythms, chants, music, and dances originating from all twelve departments of Benin. This integration process seeks to represent the diverse cultural heritage found across the nation's administrative regions within a unified sonic identity. By drawing from the specific auditory traditions of each department, the producer aims to create a cohesive framework that reflects the geographical and social breadth of the country. Fiacre Ahidomèhou emphasized that the project will focus on the preservation of authentic elements while modernizing the delivery of these sounds to ensure they resonate with contemporary audiences.

The technical approach to this project involves extensive research into the rhythmic patterns and vocal styles prevalent in the twelve departments. Fifi Fender will oversee the cataloging of these traditional elements, ensuring that the resulting musical signature remains representative of the country's varied cultural landscape. This process is viewed by the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage as a vital step in codifying the intangible cultural assets of Benin.

Collaborative Development and Promotion

Government officials plan to involve all cultural sector stakeholders in the development process for this musical signature. Participation from these groups will occur prior to the official launch of a national campaign designed to promote the new sound identity. The Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage has indicated that this inclusive strategy is intended to ensure that the final product enjoys broad support and legitimacy among the artistic community.

Stakeholders, including musicians, ethnomusicologists, and cultural heritage organizations, will be invited to contribute their expertise and feedback as the project progresses. This consultative phase is designed to refine the musical elements selected by Fifi Fender, ensuring that the synthesis of traditional chants, rhythms, and dances is both accurate and respectful of local traditions.

Once the stakeholders have finalized their contributions, the government will initiate a national campaign. This promotional effort will serve to introduce the new musical signature to the Beninese public and international markets. The campaign, which is scheduled to follow the stakeholder engagement phase, will utilize various media platforms to showcase the unified sonic identity. Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Yassine Latoundji and Fiacre Ahidomèhou have expressed confidence that this systematic approach will strengthen the national brand of Benin through its unique musical output. The project remains a central focus for the Ministry as it seeks to elevate the profile of Beninese arts.
