Benin Launches Internet-Free University Transport Ticket System

Benin has introduced a new system allowing university transport tickets to be purchased without an internet connection. The initiative aims to streamline access to student transportation services across the country, enhancing convenience for a broad spectrum of students. This innovative approach ensures that access to essential transport services is not limited by digital connectivity. Smartphone users can utilize the national platform for university services to acquire these tickets, providing a modern and efficient option for those with internet access.

How to Purchase Tickets

Students can acquire transport tickets by dialing the USSD code *611# from any classic mobile phone. This method allows access to the ticketing system without requiring an internet connection or a smartphone, making it accessible to all students regardless of their device type. For platform access, whether via USSD or the national online platform, students must use their National Pupil Identifier (NPI). This unique identifier ensures secure and personalized access to the system. Upon their initial login, the student ID number serves as the default password, which users are advised to change for enhanced security. This dual approach ensures broad accessibility for all university students, regardless of their device type or internet availability, reinforcing the government's commitment to inclusive educational support.

System Scope and Details

The new transport ticket system encompasses students from several prominent institutions: the University of Abomey-Calavi, the University of Parakou, the National University of Agriculture, and the National University of Sciences, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics. This full coverage ensures that a significant portion of the student population benefits from the initiative. The program facilitates student travel across 12 cities, addressing the diverse geographical needs of university students throughout Benin. To support this extensive network, the system utilizes a strong fleet of 63 buses, which are meticulously distributed over 28 distinct lines. This strategic distribution is designed to optimize routes and minimize waiting times for students. Details regarding the bus distribution, including specific routes and schedules, were officially published on September 14, providing students with ample time to familiarize themselves with the new arrangements. Each trip on these university transport services is priced at an affordable 200 FCFA, making daily commuting more economical for students.

Implementation and Access

The new university transport system is scheduled to commence operations from September 21, 2026, allowing sufficient time for all necessary preparations and student awareness campaigns. To board the university buses, students will be required to present a QR code, which serves as their valid ticket. This code must be shown at the validation terminal located on each bus, ensuring a swift and secure boarding process. The system's design aims to ensure efficient and secure access for all eligible students, reducing instances of unauthorized use and improving overall service delivery. This digital validation method is a key component of the modern transport solution.

Payment and Support

Payment for the new transport tickets can be processed through BJ Pay, utilizing widely available mobile money networks such as MTN, Moov, or Celtiis. This integration with popular mobile payment platforms offers convenience and flexibility for students. For students who do not possess a smartphone or prefer an alternative method, an option is available where they can provide their National Pupil Identifier (NPI) and Personal Identification Number (PIN) to an authorized agent for ticket acquisition. These agents are strategically located to assist students in purchasing tickets without direct digital interaction. A dedicated support line has been established to assist users with any queries or issues they may encounter, reachable by dialing 01 52 61 10 10. This support infrastructure shows the commitment to a smooth and user-friendly experience for all students utilizing the new transport system.
